Feel free to add (or download) pictures from the Fun Run! Visit site | Add pictures | Manage email notifications A NOTE FROM THE SCIENCE LAB Dear First Grade Families, For the next two weeks in science lab, we are learning about the moon phases. Students will use styrofoam balls and flashlights as models of the moon and sun to observe the moon's phases! In the past, students have asked me how they can make their own models at home: Materials: styrofoam ball (from a craft store), a chopstick, and a flashlight. I provided students with a copy of this moon phase calendar for your child to use during the month of October to observe and record their observations about the moon. If the weather does not permit observation, then students can check online at a site such as moongiant.com. I told them that if they remember to return their observation log to me, I will give them a small prize (I will be so impressed with anyone who remembers to do this daily and returns it in a month from now!) For your convenience, I've attached an electronic copy that can be completed and returned any time during the school year if you missed the moon observations in October. Science starts with our natural curiosity, our WONDER, which leads to EXPLORATION and finally new DISCOVERIES! Thank you for partnering with me in guiding your child's science journey! If you have any questions or concerns, please email me. Happy observing! Mrs. Erickson A NOTE FROM THE ART IN ACTION TEAM Dear Parents, Hello from the Art-in-action volunteer team (Anna Sophie, Kelly and Erin)! We are organizing art projects for the kiddos a couple times per month and we will need extra hands. We are looking for parents to join us on some Wednesday mornings between 10 and 11:30 am. You can sign-up in advance or let us know that week. The art program we are bringing to the classroom is creative and engaging for the kids and a great way to spend time in the classroom, so we encourage you to join in the fun! If you think you might be interested in volunteering, please respond this week by emailing [email protected]. We will send more details and a notice before each lesson as a call for volunteers. Grandparents and other relatives are welcome to join in, as long as they have completed the Volunteer Clearance form. Here is more about the art program we are bringing to the classroom: The Art in Action Program provides a high quality, comprehensive K–8 visual arts curriculum. Students learn about works of art from cultures around the world, how to look at art using art vocabulary and concepts, and how to express themselves by creating their own unique masterpieces. Supported by training classes and online resources, the unique spiral curriculum—introducing and reinforcing concepts through the 9 program levels—gives students a solid foundation in drawing, painting, and sculpture techniques. The multifaceted lessons develop students’ critical-thinking skills, creativity, visual literacy, self-esteem, and an appreciation of other cultures. Stay creative! RAZKIDS IS UP AND RUNNING! Dear Families, I have signed your child up to be a part of an online reading program called Raz-Kids. There are some wonderful things about this program and your child will benefit from all it has to offer. For each book, your child should: listen - one time read - two times take quiz re-read book after low scoring quiz re-take quiz --Student’s job: Read on Raz-Kids at least 2x/week. Read the book aloud to an adult. Be able to answer the quiz questions independently. --Parent’s job: Sit with your child. :) Listen for fluency and check for understanding as needed. Star BONUS Points - Woohoo! As your child works through the program, he/she will earn star points. These can be spent in the Rocket Room and the Robot Builder. This is a fun part of the program that hopefully gives incentive. Please be sure to give them time to spend their points. Hello!
