This is a school-wide effort and your participation is appreciated in making this a success for the Walnut Grove community. We ask that each student raise $75 for the benefit of the entire school. This book bag ‘folder’ will come home on Fridays and is always due back on Friday. This means there are TWO folders due back every Friday, Each week your child will bring home books for reading homework. Some of the books will be ones your child read with me during staggered literacy time, while other books will be ones your child is independently practicing from his/her Book Bag that stays at school.. Child’s Job: Practice reading the books for 10-15 minutes EVERY night. We reread in order to build fluency and comprehension. This is great for ALL readers at ALL reading levels!! Parent’s Job: This is a time to stop and sit with your child. Let him/her read to you. Support as needed. Ask comprehension questions! ✰Why do you think…? ✰How did…? ✰What would you do if…? ✰Tell me what you know about this character. ✰Can you retell the story to me? ✰What does this (word or phrase from book) mean? Everything we read is purposeful. Your child’s book level may seem ‘easy’ at times. I will do this in order to work on a specific strategy (i.e. - noticing quotation marks, reading with expression, deeper exploration of characters/story elements, reading a play with parts to share, building fluency or confidence in general, focusing on specific word chunks, spelling patterns or vocabulary, simply SLOWING down and pausing at periods and commas!!! …. the list goes on and on). Sometimes your child’s book will have a post-it on the front cover with specific vocabulary words or sight words we focused on - please discuss these with your child. Most importantly, enjoy this time together and enjoy watching your child grow as a reader!
